Dear PEI Member:

The second edition of PEI’s Recommended Practices for the Storage and Dispensing of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) (PEI/RP1100-15) is now available from PEI. The 2015 edition supersedes and replaces the 2010 edition of RP1100.

The 18-page manual provides authoritative guidance for the proper installation and operation of DEF storage and dispensing equipment that will preserve DEF’s quality and prevent releases into the environment. More than a dozen substantive changes were made in the 2015 edition, including references to applicable international standards, maintenance of DEF quality, use of a dry interstice, pipe thread compatibility, proper ballast material, and applicability of certain weights and measures handbooks. A new chapter on safety was also added. In addition, many editorial changes also were made that improve the readability of the document.

The publication was revised by the PEI DEF Committee: Steve Hieber (chair), PWI, Incorporated; Steve Childers, Southern Pump & Tank Co.; Tad C. Cooper, Acterra Group, Inc.; Brendan J. Foster, Benecor, Inc.; Jeff Lexvold, Xerxes Corporation; Randy Moses, Wayne Fueling Systems; Steve Murray, Murray Equipment, Inc.; Dave Polak, Blue1USA; Terry Ross, Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores; John Scandurra, Conklin Services & Construction Inc.; Donald Smith, Balcrank Corporation; Matthew Sparrow, Brenntag; Keith Spiker, QuikTrip Corporation; and James E. Young, The Young Group.

Three other PEI recommended practices are at some stage of revision. The closing date for comments to PEI’s Recommended Practices for the Inspection and Maintenance of UST Systems (PEI/RP900) is October 30. PEI is accepting comments to revise its Recommended Practices for the Testing and Verification of Spill, Overfill, Leak Detection and Secondary Containment Equipment (PEI/RP1200) and Recommended Practices for Installation of Underground Liquid Storage Systems (PEI/RP100) through January 29, 2016. At this year’s PEI Convention at the NACS Show in Las Vegas, PEI is offering expanded educational and networking opportunities in the PEI 1-on-1 Pavilion on Monday and Tuesday, October 12 and 13. PEI 1-on-1 is located in the Fuel Equipment & Services area of the tradeshow in booth 7401. It’s the ideal location to sit, have a cup of coffee and join any of the small group discussions.

On Monday, many of the morning session speakers will be available from noon to 4:00 p.m. One popular roundtable is likely to be at 1:00 p.m. with the EPA OUST staff, who will expand on their morning session about the new tank regulations. A surprise session has also been slated at 3:00 p.m. for PEI Women called “Non-Negotiables to Survive, Thrive and Find Purpose” led by Pam Borton.

Tuesday presents the opportunity to meet the incoming PEI President at noon. This is a great chance to learn more about the association and express your interest in becoming more involved, such as joining PEI committees.  Speakers from the morning session on EMV will be on hand at 1:00 p.m. to answer questions. For something extra, please join Don Onwiler, executive director of the National Conference on Weights & Measures, at 3:00 p.m. to discuss issues that impact PEI members.

The list here only touches on the highlights of what you will find in PEI 1-on-1 this year. Click here and scroll down to find the full listing of PEI 1-on-1 events.
