The program for the 2014 PEI Convention at the NACS Show (October 7-10, Las Vegas) is complete. Registration numbers are trending with previous PEI Conventions in Las Vegas; the trade show sold out once again in record time; an impressive lineup of speakers and topics has been arranged for PEI education sessions; and networking opportunities abound.

If you have not already, we recommend that you register soon. The deadline to register and receive your badge in the mail prior to arriving in Las Vegas is Tuesday, September 2. Register now to avoid the need to wait at registration on site to pick up your badge. The deadline to register and save $150 per attendee with advance registration rates is Friday, September 26. Don’t wait until the last minute. Save time and money by registering today.

General Sessions

10-Groups Breakfast and General Session. Ken Gronbach is a gifted speaker, nationally recognized author, and expert futurist in the field of demography and generational marketing. In this session, Gronbach will share his insights about what is coming and how to prepare your business. Why is retail destined to change? Will big data change marketing and branding forever? What countries and continents are demographically positioned to excel? Learn all this and more! All those interested and eligible for 10-Group membership are welcome―and encouraged―to take part. PEI Kick-Off Breakfast and Keynote. If anyone knows how to recharge positivity and make learning new ideas exciting, it’s Sam Glenn. He is a leading voice on how attitude relates to leadership, dealing with change, creating a culture of engagement, improving customer service, and advancing your professional and personal development. Start the PEI Convention off on the right foot with this exciting, energizing presentation. Tickets are $30.

PEI Membership Breakfast and Meeting. Enjoy a hearty breakfast and listen as PEI President Phil Farrell and I share our perspectives on the association and our industry. Officers for 2015 will be elected and new directors will be installed.

NACS Closing General Session. Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will deliver a compelling behind-the-scenes view of world events over the past quarter century, as well as the context for how current affairs could affect and reshape our political and retail landscape. Gates served as the 22nd Secretary of Defense from 2006 to 2011 under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama.


Wednesday, October 8:

  • Economic Update―Brian Beaulieu, CEO of ITR Economics and chief economist for Vistage International, will cover a wide variety of topics, including short- and long-term global economic forecasts, regional economic updates, an outlook on inflation, and the relationship of political events and economic growth. He will detail which economic indicators executives should follow and provide proven strategies for leveraging economic forecasts.
  • Profitability―Over the course of two separate sessions, Michael E. Workman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Industrial Distribution, Texas A&M, and University of Innovative Distribution (UID) faculty member, will discuss strategies for retaining, enhancing, refocusing and maximizing profit, as well as issues relating to new elements of profitability. You will come away with practical ideas and tangible metrics to increase your bottom line.
  • CNG Fueling Facilities: Partnering to Learn―Marcel Moreau, consultant to the PEI committee drafting PEI/RP1500: Recommended Practices for the Design, Installation, Operation and Maintenance of CNG Fueling Facilities, will introduce this groundbreaking document and moderate a panel discussion about how you can prepare to work in the CNG realm. The panel consists of three distinguished and diverse panelists with hands-on CNG experience who will share their knowledge and individual perspectives.

  • Emergency Generator Fueling Systems: Opportunities & How-Tos―Three members of the PEI Generator Fueling System Installation Committee will join committee chair and session moderator Roy Creley, Lakes Region Environmental Contractors, Inc., to discuss the market potential and challenges of emergency generator installation, regional differences, codes and more. The session also will include discussion of the soon-to-be published PEI/RP1400: Recommended Practices for the Design and Installation of Fueling Systems for Emergency Generators, Stationary Diesel Engines and Oil Burner Systems. Panel members include:
    • Chris Collura, Guardian Fueling Technologies
    • Steve Latimer, Mascott Equipment Company Inc.
    • Billy Pierce, Vital Fuel Systems

PEI 1-on-1―Topic roundtables in PEI 1-on-1 will include CNG fueling facilities, profitability, PEI Women and emergency generator systems.

Thursday, October 9:

  • Future Fuels as Opportunities―John Eichberger, vice president of government relations for NACS and executive director of the Fuels Institute, will share current forecasts and his expert insights about the future of fuels and vehicle technology. Given the ambiguity in the marketplace, this topic couldn’t be more timely to help you identify trends, overcome obstacles and otherwise prepare for the future.
  • Health Care Reform in the Here and Now―Gene Marks, CPA, president, Marks Group PC, will discuss health care reform and how it is unfolding. As an outspoken weekly columnist for the New York Times, Forbes, Inc.com and The Huffington Post, and a frequent guest on Fox, Fox Business, MSNBC and CNBC, Marks brings a perspective that is unique, refreshing and entertaining.
  • Negotiation: The Art of Getting What You Want―Michael Schatzki, MPA, CSP, principal, Negotiation Dynamics, and UID faculty member, will present a special session on how to boost your bottom-line profitability by improving your negotiation skills. He will focus on effective management of the negotiation process: how to read what the other party is thinking, how to adjust tactics to each situation and how to achieve desired outcomes while creating win-win situations for all involved.
  • PEI 1-on-1―Activities in PEI 1-on-1 will include a chance to meet the incoming PEI President, and small group discussions about health care reform, negotiation tactics, confined space training/issues, and weights and measures.


Young Executives Discussion Groups and Reception. All PEI members age 21 to 45 who are registered for Convention are invited to attend the YE discussion groups and reception. If you’re not already a YE member, but are interested in joining, this is an ideal opportunity to get a feel for what the group is all about and how it can help advance your career in the industry.

PEI Women. This year marks the official launch of PEI Women—and this session is sure to get things started on the right foot. Network with your peers. Listen to PEI Women Committee members discuss what the future holds for women in the industry. Learn details about the 2015 PEI Women’s Conference to be held April 29-May 1 (save the date!) in Denver. And hear renowned demographer Ken Gronbach share a presentation about the new role of women in the workplace.

PEI Industry Reception. Unwind, listen to live music, and enjoy delicious food and drink in the company of fellow PEI members. The PEI Industry Reception, located just outside the main Fuel Equipment & Services entrance of the trade show floor, is the place to be on Thursday, October 9, at 5:30.

PEI After-Hours Lounge. Held on the first two nights of Convention, the PEI After-Hours Lounge is located at the Tempo Bar inside the Westgate Resort & Casino (formerly the LVH), and is a great way to relax and catch up with industry peers before heading out to dinner in Las Vegas.

Find Red―Find PEI. Find Red volunteers make a valuable contribution to PEI by helping guide Convention attendees to various sessions and events. This is an excellent opportunity for personnel and companies to interact with industry professionals, while receiving added exposure on Convention signage and in the Convention program. Trade Show

Last but certainly not least is the trade show (October 8-10). A whopping 672 booths sold out in record time this year to 209 PEI members and other companies exhibiting in the Fuel Equipment & Service area of the NACS Show. There is no better place to learn about the latest products, technologies and services in our industry than to spend time at the trade show. The complete Exhibitor Guide for the Fuel Equipment & Services area will be included in the 4th quarter PEI Journal, which will be available at the convention, along with a special “Product & Technology Showcase.”
