SOUND PAYMENTS OFFERS EMV PUMP UPGRADES WITHOUT KITS

Sound Payments recently introduced its Sound Easy Pump, which allows fuel station owners to upgrade fuel pumps to accept EMV payments without a kit.

Most full EMV pump upgrade kits, according to the company, contain screens and printers for installation on specific pumps. 

The kits require proper cabling (cat 5 or wireless Avalon), and installation usually takes four to six hours per pump. Installation includes removal of the pump door and equipment off the pump door. Then, a tech must create a template and draw the portion to cut from the door. Next, a tech must cut a hole in the door big enough for the entire kit. The kit consists of a screen, printer, PIN pad and card reader. After the tech mounts the kit on the pump door, he or she must replace the pump door and begin wiring the unit.

Installation of the Sound Easy Pump is quick, requires minimal pump changes and is low-cost, according to the company.

1. Set up the indoor connection. A “bridge” device ties into a customer’s existing network to communicate to the forecourt. The device plugs into a network router, and Sound Payments sets a static IP address on it to match the customer’s network scheme. A half-page of instructions walks the customer through directing the forecourt back to the bridge for pump authorization. Steps include setting the bridge IP into the settings on the forecourt, then (if in place) setting a device-specific route to the bridge from the customer’s firewall.

2. Install the payment device. The Sound Easy Pump (IM20) is an all-in-one unit that is a complete payment terminal, which talks directly to the payment host. The device is full touch screen, pin on glass, enabled with built-in card reader (EMV and swipe), contactless and Wi-Fi. Sound Payments uses existing printers and can use existing displays for media, too. 

Installation is two parts.

First, power down to the pump. Wayne pumps have power boards with a three-prong plug that Sound Payments can send with the unit that plugs into the board. No tools are required. Gilbarco pumps have power boards with a three-plug that requires a flathead screwdriver. Loosen the hot, neutral and ground plugs on the power board. Then, slip three wires into the same, loosened slots. Tighten the screws.

The second part, mounting the IM20 onto the pump, requires removing a couple of original items from the pump. Remove the PIN pad, which is mounted with four screws, and replace it with the blank Sound Payments template using the same four screws. 

The next part differs, depending on pump brand. For a Gilbarco pump, remove the original card reader and replace it with the blank Sound Payments template using the four screws from the card reader. Remove the panel and four screws directly above the card reader slot (the tap pay module panel). Slide the IM20 into that slot. The IM20 comes with a mounting bracket and screws that slide on the back of the pump door.

For a Wayne pump, remove the old card reader and slide the IM20 into the slot. Attach the enclosed mounting brackets to the back of the pump door, and put the four screws into the back on the IM20.

3. Power on and configure. Plug in the power to the IM20 and close the pump door. Once the IM20 is powered, a message on the screen reads, “Welcome to My Store,” and displays a debit and credit button. 

The IM20 comes fully configured with card table and debit encryption pre-loaded. If a site’s existing Wi-Fi information was provided, it came preconfigured, too. If Wi-Fi information was provided or if new Wi-Fi was added during installation, the technician may login to the unit, select the Wi-Fi, type in the password and logout. This must be done to every unit.

4. Test and complete. A unit on Wi-Fi communicates to the processor directly with Point-to-Point Encrypted data (P2PE). This means the unit is a touchscreen, Wi-Fi and card reader, and it has built-in PCI-compliant encryption, removing the firewall from the scheme. Because it is a payment terminal, the unit will stop working if tampering occurs. Now, insert a card or tap to pay on the unit. After the transaction is approved, the tester may remove his or her card. The unit reads, “Begin Fueling.” When the transaction is complete, a receipt prints from the original printer. Testing and installation are complete.
