Statistical Inventory Reconciliation

In the operation of petroleum product storage tanks, a technique for leak detection.

The method begins with daily gauging of the tanks, combined with recordkeeping of product withdrawals and deliveries. If all the figures so obtained are conscientiously recorded in a prescribed form, maintained over a designated period, and statistically evaluated by an independent consultant on a regular basis, they will provide a reliable indication of the integrity of the tank-and-piping system. Most states approve SIR procedures as an accepted leak detection method.
