Which method of training do you prefer for certifications?

At home study package / online course

I learn so much more in a class setting with an instructor. A recertification I have no problem with taking it online.

I firmly believe that the equipment manufacturers significantly dilute the knowledge base of their equipment with online certifications. Re-Certs online I totally get but initial certification suffers. With that said, even several of the formal, classroom certifications have been watered down, condensed too much and fall short of their intended purpose.

Training isn't even close to what it used to be in my opinion. Unfortunately, it has become cookie cutter to some degree. The best classes, even when taught within the corporate restraints, are taught by the guys that have real world experience. There is one company that teaches a lot of USELESS CRAP when applied to 99% of real world scenarios....

My company would much rather pay for the training up front, hoping that we don't have to pay the cost later (still only a coin toss).

Learn by doing!! I've been loading ruby sapphire topaz etc and never stepped foot in a class room

Sanity? Sorry, but I don’t remember having such a useless thing in the first place.

The training received currently is nowhere as involved as it used to be. Period.....I'm not sure who is behind all of the ONLINE CRAP...for initial training, but the benefit is just not there. Politically we have to deal with it. Recerts I can fall in line with. I have been told that the current training methods were developed because companies did not want to pay the total cost of sending someone away to be trained. Strictly coming from an old dog opinion, the online CRAP does not get it done. I have talked with more than a few owners and managers, and I would say the consensus is the same. I am really curious about the number of people that have a substantial amount of experience in the field who get involved with development of the training. I don't want to discount the trainers, or the knowledge the are presenting, but without the classroom hands on, it just ain't the same. Learn by doing, and hands on is the first part of doing. When the courses are cut down, the hands on is cut down substantially. (if you really want to know how I feel, just ask).
