Everytime I deal with a Sapphire I have to make sure the site has the ability to send the whole price book back into Sapphire when my upgrade is done. I have a serial RS-232 cable from the backoffice port on the Sapphire to my laptop null moden adapter, I have a ethernet cable going from the ethernet port on my laptop to the router. In Rubylink com options I can sucessfully push and pull PLUs but when it comes to backing all of them up I only get the Gempro's 1000. Has anyone have this problem then found a solution?

Our IT whiz found a few files missing in my Gemcom program, I had all my settings correct. I loaded a new Sapphire with several thousand PLUs with no problem. Then a few days later I couldn't backup a PLU file from a Ruby-only site. Yes, I changed back to serial in Com Options. I think it's just time for a new laptop. And the whole VeriFone thing just ain't what it used to be.

I also backup in sms and gemcom32. Better safe then sorry. Especially at 3a.m. Not just that, I can backup a regular ruby system with gemcom32 when doing a sapphire install and restore 10,000 plu's into a new sapphire. You can do it with ruby manager if you know how to adjust the file structure, but it's difficult. Gemcom32 is a life saver if used correctly. It sounds like your not setting you're com options to ethernet when you go to restore.

SMS wont restore employees passwords because most are not PCI compliant.
I just print out the employees backdoor and put them back in by hand

I always do as well. I can never get employee IDs to restore with SMS, so that is one of my biggest reasons for doing both, but I guess I am just overly cautious. I print out just about everything as well for triple protection. Better safe than sorry. I have been sorry once or twice before in the distant past. Definitely don't want to go back there. When I first started in this field up until about 9 or 10 years ago, I didn't have a copy of ruby manager, and every reload or upgrade required a full reprogramming. Don't much miss those days.

That's not paranoid, that's just real world experience. Hardware fails, media fails, files get corrupted. Guys who have been through hand programming a site at 3AM see multiple backups as an investment in a shorter service call and more home time at some future date.

By the way, if you're an owner/manager who calls me out at 3AM and wants me at something close to my best, two words...FRESH coffee.

Better to spend time for safety than spending time recovering!

I do the same. CYA is a beautiful thing.

is ruby comm options set for "use ethernet port?" If you have it set to use serial port, it will only talk to the ruby and bypass the plu's found on newpro. I'd also suggest making sure you have the latest version of gemcom32 and you read up on the method to backup plus.

Use C-Stor Lite :)

Sounds to me like the settings in com options are wrong.

See, that's why you guys are so great. I used to get backups from SMS then got steered away from it. I'd still like to be able to download the whole file with Gemcom32 but I remember putting all that SMS information in a file or thumb drive and putting it back in that way. Thanks so much.

I agree with xardoz. use SMS. you can back up a whole site including plu's. so much faster.
