Posted - 05/10/2012 : 19:30:48 This is just FYI as I had never seen this one before.
Was called to a site that had ALL pumps comms down. Checked all the usual suspects. D-box board, Crind Boards, EDH. Could NOT find a reason. Then the Store LAN started dropping out. Lost communications between the server, client and the EDH. Tried swapping the router, rebooting, etc. Put a new EDH in. All with zero result.
Started crawling under the counter to start tracing down cables and bumped the Hughes box. It powered down. The power cord was loose. The pump communications came up within 10 seconds and everything started talking. Grabbed the power brick for the Hughes equipment and it came apart in my hand. It smelled burnt inside. If I plug it back up all the pump comms die again.
All I can figure is the bad Hughes power brick was putting electrical noise on the power circuits for the fuel controls. The weirdest part was that the credit and debit cards were still working. Called Chevron help desk and it took forever to convince them they had a problem with the Hughes equipment.
Who would've thought the sat equipment could kill the pump comms and store lan?

Posted - 05/14/2012 : 17:10:21 Rumor has it a tech got an emergency dispatch to Chevron site after 5 p.m. because they had no credit card network, the satellite symbol on the Nucleus had the Ghostbusters symbol. The tech called the site himself and asked the manager to look at the back of the Directway, no the 25 pin cable was not connected, and he had told the Chevron Help Desk on the other side of the world the same thing. He plugged it in and back in business. Hughes techs had been there earlier.
Runor has it the tech who phone fixed it charged for the 320 mile roundtrip and 7 hours travel, all OT.
Tech learned once that they won't pay for his skills on phone support, the help desks know what they are doing. |

Posted - 05/14/2012 : 06:23:00 I used to do stuff like power the VSAT down or pull the DTR line out of the connector just to hear what they tell you. After I told them what I had done, I would get passed to a supervisor, and eventually would get quicker resolution. |

Posted - 05/13/2012 : 13:01:08 It Seems strange but considering the fantastic design of the enhance dispenser hub i am not all that suprised. I mean i have some sites with encore 500 that if i power the dispenser off for to long the crinds intermittently stop working |

The worst one I ever had was 10 hours trying to get a passport online with the network..After repeated request to verify the network settings they gave me someone ACTUALLY checked and found out the IP info they were giving us was wrong.
Gotta love it.. I think it's safe to say the only network that knows what they're doing is xom. |

Posted - 05/10/2012 : 20:11:16 Chevron RTS is the WORST in this regard. I've spent HOURS on the phone with them (in a single service call, more than once!) before getting anywhere. The problem almost always is with their equipment, too.
"Well we can ping the satellite, so the problem must be in the Sapphire/Passport. You should call Verifone/Gilbarco." |
