Posted - 04/09/2012 : 19:39:49 Had this idea for a new thread based on a question someone had in another. What are some of the calls you get frequently that are easy money?
My two favorites, in case you missed the other thread I mentioned them in:
* Printers showing out of paper on POS, but site just loaded paper - find site is loading paper on top of the old spools causing the new rolls not to hit the paper sense switch (I had one site once, where I found not one, not two, but THREE empty spools under the actual roll of paper)
* Site calls in 2 out of 3 grades not pumping on any given pump - find site has MPD3s and those 2 grade nozzles are in the wrong cradles (Honestly, how does this happen? For someone to put them back this way by mistake, they'd have to have both nozzles off the hook at the same time in the first place, which doesn't really make any sense to me.)
And one more I didn't mention, just for good measure:
* Site reports TLS showing Delivery Needed on any given tank but they just got a fuel drop - walk in, hit the red "ALARM/TEST" button to clear the message and return to "ALL FUNCTIONS NORMAL," walk out
Of course, for any of these issues site gets a minimum half hour labor and full trip charge. |

Posted - 04/19/2012 : 19:41:53 Just replaced a bad Diesel probe because it wasn't reading the correct height and as soon as i'm done the owner comes out saying "Hey buddy where is my Diesel? Before you came i had 2000 gallons , now i have 500, this insn't right, you took my Diesel, where did you put it? This isn't right". Needless to say that went on for 45 min and i ended up leaving with the new probe and the guy chasing the truck and yelling "You're very bad technician, you took my Diesel". |

Posted - 04/17/2012 : 22:13:32 Inside credit on passport down. 6 hr drive round trip. Site said shell network was down night before and now no cards. I said did G/B dial in? Yes they couldnt find the problem. Told customer approx cost to come out. I asked them to check pinpad and it shows time & date. POS shows pumps offline. Asked them to check network status and they said the console wouldnt respond. I made trip , found the ras line disconnected from passport, lan for passport in port 2 on router and ras line crammed into port 1 of the router. I put ras back into passport , lan back to port 1 and all came up and worked fine. I had to explain to them again how to connect ras to the non dedicated phone line. |

Posted - 04/17/2012 : 21:57:25 4 hour windshield time, (2 hour each way), double time, arrived on site with PO, had responded with ETA, arrived on site, earlier than expected, to find another company arrived 5 minutes earlier. Got signature, got paid, was a good day! |

Mine is the opposite of this thread. Was at a site, contractor shows up unannounced, starts working on dispensers. Comes inside after he finishes with the bill. Owner asked what he did and who called him. Contractor tells owner he is performing annual work on site, changing filters testing llds, etc. Owner tells contractor there is no service agreement for that, refuses to pay. Contractor gets angry, goes out to truck, makes a phone call. Comes back and tells owner, he is at the wrong site. ooops
That is funny ****! |

Posted - 04/17/2012 : 20:13:56 A few years back on a Chevron contract call for a periodic line fail; I was the 3rd or 4th tech to look at the problem. Previous trips had replaced diaphragms, line check, PLLD. I looked at the line length, saw it was way off. Programmed the correct length. Put the call on a 1 week hold, line test passed that night. In and out in 15 minutes. 1 minute of problem solving, 14 minutes of paperwork. |

I did something similar once investigating a BIR variance at a site... The address was so similar my dyslexic brain transposed a couple numbers, anyway, ended up about to write my paperwork "NO PROBLEM FOUND," when I realized my mistake. Luckily it was a major chain contract, and I hadn't used any parts, so I quietly slipped out, drove up the street to the proper location and did my work. This was before GPS, so I just billed all the time (including that which I wasted) to the contract and no one was ever the wiser. |

Had something similar today. Tesoro site reported 3 out of 8 FPs were locked up in the Ruby/Sapphire and were bagged out. Site was instructed to call Verifone help desk, which they claimed they already had, and they couldn't help.
So I roll out there this morning (1.25 hour drive one way), nothing bagged out... "Oh, we called Verifone and they were able to fix it."
...
"Oh, but we sent an email you didn't need to come!"
"That's fine, tell it to my billing department. Sign here, please." |

Here's a common one I had again a month ago. Site is down late at night, they know the E-Stop was pushed but can't get anything to work. They SWEAR all the breakers are on as you try convince them something is still off if there's no power outside. They SWEAR again that nothing is off and you have to come out right now. You drive to the site, flip the switch and let everything reboot then show the 18 year old girl the clearly marked E-stop breaker or switch. Sign here please... Oh, then your company gets a phone call the next day from the irate owner asking why I didn't just tell the girl over the phone where the switch was?
Drove 6 hours on Thanksgiving Day for the same thing, cha ching! |
