Posted - 03/16/2012 : 21:11:20 Got a call at 5:45am
Service...
That new pin-pad you put in keeps freezing up
Sorry to hear that, what does it say on the screen?
I have already cycled power to it....
Alright, what does it say on the screen now and are the blue arrows running?
I don't know, I am in the office... Guess I can walk out there....
No problem, I can hold...
It says slide card and the arrow and running...
Can you please run a card so I can know what it displays when it freezes?\
Why, when it freezes we just have to cycle power...
Please just run a card and let me know what the display says....
Well, if you are not going to help me, I will just call the office! CLICK! |

Posted - 03/23/2012 : 20:28:35 I once spent 45 minutes on the phone with a customer whose customer display had become disconnected from his Passport. I'll condense and paraphrase:
Is the display getting power? Don't know sir. Do you see a green flashing square on it? Yes, there is green OK, then it obviously has power. Can you find the Edgeport device attached to the Passport CPU tower? It's a beige box with a bunch of cables plugged into it There are many boxes here. Too many cable! Yes, but this one should be attached to the tower with velcro. Do you see it? There is one here that says "Linksys" No, that's not it. Should be attached to the top of the tower with velcro I think I found, has a big dial with "A" and "B" No, it's attached with velcro. Velcro. Ah yes I found OK, if you look at the back, is there anything plugged into "Cust Display"? There are many empty socket Yes, but how about the one that says "Cust Display"? I don't know Can you pull out the tower so you can get a good look? There is too many cable Well, if you can't get the tower out to look at the back of the Edgeport, I'm going to have to come out and charge you for a service call. <10 minutes later> OK I got it out Good. Now, is there anything plugged into the "Cust Display"? Yes! OK, can you follow the cable and see where it goes? <5 minutes later> It's going to receipt printer Is your receipt printer working? Yes Then you aren't looking at the right port. Again, we're looking at the port labeled "Cust Display" Oh there is nothing in that one OK, can you follow the cables that come out of the customer display and go under the counter? One will have a round connector that should go to a power brick plugged into an electrical socket. The other one should have a rectangular connector. Cable is going to pin pad Then you aren't looking at the right cable. These will be coming out of the base of the display They go into hole in counter Yes, I know. Can you follow them under the counter and see where they go? <3 minutes later> They go to black box plugged into outlet Both of them? No the other one disappears. Too many cable! OK, do you see any 9 pin rectangular connectors down there that aren't plugged into anything? No Are you sure? Look carefully. Might even have a label on it that says "Cust Display" No OK, if you can't find it, I'm going to have to come out. Oh I found! OK, plug it into the port on the Edgeport labeled "Cust Display" OK I did Is your display working now? Still no work OK, reboot the Passport and see what happens <5 minutes later> Still no work Does it still have the flashing green square? Yes OK, double check that you have it plugged into the "Cust Display" port Yes it is Alright, well it looks like I'm going to have to come out there
I omitted a lot of stuff. The call literally lasted around 47 minutes, he kept putting me down and taking breaks to help customers.
So I rolled out there the next day. He'd found a leftover loose cable under the counter apparently and plugged it into the "Cust Display" port on the Edgeport. It was like a 4 foot cable, and the other end was sitting right there, not plugged into anything. I don't see how he could have missed it.
That's not the best part, though. The best part is the actual customer display cable was less than three inches from the back of the Edgeport, just hanging there, and it even still had the "Cust display" label right on it. Three inches.
See this cable here? This is the one that is supposed to be plugged in I unplug that one Why did you do that? I was trying to hook up security camera ... |

Posted - 03/23/2012 : 09:57:17 This is close to what i had happen.(First time I was ever there)The entrance was off the main drag in Miami, one way in off the main drag, and one way out, another entrance in the shopping center. I blocked the whole single lane entrance with my van and opened the sump and shut the ball valve and pulled the yoke and the owner ran out and told me to move my van. I told him it was too dangerous to work without the entrance blocked, he told me to move the van 3 more times, i refused. Then i told him i will move it as long as he would lay on the ground in front of the sump and cones to stop traffic. He looked at me funny and i said "what is it too dangerous to do that?" Move your van, he says, lay on the ground, i said, for a few minutes this goes on. He then walks away, about 5 minutes later a Miami cop shows up and tells me to move my van, I say no problem, leaving the stp apart, i close the sump and park next to the store, i write up a log of what happened and walk inside the store and yell thru the bullet proof glass, in front of his customers, I am letting my boss and all the employees know what you did, i am leaving now, i am not fixing the regular ever, if you realize you are stupid and call us back to repair the regular, i will call in sick. For the record my name is XXXX and i called you a stupid moron. I left and let the boss know what happened and we never went back for any calls.

had a sub-unit out at a major oil location. This location had a main entrance and a side entrance from a shopping center. The tanks were right in the middle of this side entrance. I had checked amps and then pulled my van to block the entrance and protect me. I was in the sump when the dealer walked up and said
you have to move your van, you are blocking the entrance Sorry sir but the van is there for my protection, I left enough room for people to get around and your main entrance is still open You can't block the damn entrance Sir if the van isn't here I don't work Just move you'r damn van Ok
I picked up my tools, closed the sump and pulled my van into a parking entrance. I was washing my hands when he walked up
Is my nolead working no sir, it sure isn't what are you doing then I told you if the van isn't there I am not working in the sump We will see about this, I am calling corporate
I waited for him to make the phone call, he came out and said
the guy in charge of the region wanted to talk to me and he is pissed
I answered the phone and the big guy said Jeff what is going on? I explained to him the issue and he said put your van back where ever you need it and fix it.
All I could do was smile when I was getting my ticket signed.

Posted - 03/22/2012 : 05:56:04 New site that another contractor had just built calls me on a Friday night at 930 because the other guys won't answer their phone. I go through all the usual questions about breakers, Veeder Root and e-stop on the phone and grudgingly agree to head out. Figuring this will be a quick call I take the wife and plan to stop at DQ for ice cream. I drive in the lot and see a full serve kiosk, I walk over, move all the crap off the counter and pull out the e-stop button...site starts coming back to life. Just as I walk inside and manager (also the owners wife BTW) phones me to say we don't need you now, the other contractor just fixed it over the phone. I walk her out to kiosk and show her the button, and she gets all red faced and admits she was the one who threw everything on top of it. We laugh and I hand her a bill for a bare minimum 1 hour (I was in a good mood). She refused to sign it stating that she had cancelled the call and that even if she hadn't it should be warranty...she wasn't budging.
She called the following Tuesday wanting warranty work done because of course the other contractor wasn't answering his phone. She just could not understand why I wouldn't warranty his workmanship or why I wouldn't come out on anything less than COD with payment due on arrival.

Drunk comes thru lot runs over 4 cones thru old 24" manway , blew tire and told me I had to pay for tire and rim. Luckily the idiot with him decided to back off when I told them we needed a police report before I will pay for anything. Lucky for me I seen it coming. never a time your vehicle should be far away. |

Posted - 03/21/2012 : 18:19:09 This didn't happen to me, but to one of my older more experienced colleagues:
3:AM phone call from the on-call service - all pumps down. Tech calls site back
This is ----, what's going on out there? 'I don't know, I can't pump anything" Are the pumps on? "I think so, it's hard to tell" Go outside and look at a pump close up -leaves and returns- "Nope, they're all dark" Did you check the E-stop? "the what???" - tech walks clerk through this- OK, so you need to go back by the breaker panels and check for any that are off or are tripped "It's going to be a few minutes, I have to find a flashlight" Are the breaker panels under a counter or what? "No the lights went out on the whole block about an hour ago and we haven't been able to see anything since then"

Posted - 03/21/2012 : 11:02:11 When I first started here, had an e-call for a previous employer's store. They said someone hit the E-stop and ever since they reset it, the pumps are on but they can't fuel anything. I said to them "There is a panel in the back corner in the electrical room with big breakers in it, one of them is tripped. Turn them all off and on and it'll work"
"It didn't work," "You've missed it, I've been there a dozen times for it" "Nope, we checked them all" "OK, I'll be there in 45mins."
I walk in, go to the back, flip the breaker, present the paperwork and go back home. |

Posted - 03/21/2012 : 10:39:48 About 15 years ago I got a call on a Friday afternoon from a site 4.75 hours away. We can't pump any nolead. Does the light come on on the side of the red box? No Are the breakers on? I think so Go back to both breaker panels and turn on every breaker in both boxes. Manager sets phone down and returns a couple of minutes later All breakers are on and we still can't pump nolead. You have to come down now. Are you sure you turned on EVERY breaker Yes OK I'll be there in a few hours I drove to the site and turned on the only breaker she missed and magically.... nolead works. They complained about the bill. |

Posted - 03/21/2012 : 09:05:48 Years ago working on a dispenser, all coned off and parts and tools laying all round the island. Coned off properly. Went inside to isolate power to dispenser, (breakers under the counter don't ask me why). When I hear screams from all the clerks. OH MY GOD! He ran that guy over. I pop my head up from under the counter to see what the excitement was about. Customer had driven over my cones and tools and was attempting to fuel. Apparently in the 30 seconds I was under the counter they had forgot I was down there. I walk out to the dispenser, ( He is still trying to get fuel). To which I hear. Hey! Do you work here! This piece of #$#$@ don't work! To which I reply. Yep it sure don't. But, if you'll back off by tools, parts and cones I'll fix it up especially for you to use. |
