Electrolyte

A substance which, when dissolved in a suitable solvent (as water), will conduct electricity. A battery, for example, contains an electrolyte, either in the form of a liquid or a pasty solution.

In an underground storage tank installation, water and moist soil surrounding the tanks can serve as an electrolyte. If steel tanks are not cathodically protected, corrosive reactions may occur as ions (charged atoms) move through the electrolyte.
