Corrosion

A process that occurs in nature in which a material is broken down and eaten away as a result of chemical or electrolytic action.

An unprotected underground storage tank, for example, is a candidate for corrosion. Stray electric currents coursing through the adjacent soil have the effect of causing the steel to begin to rust and pit and gradually flake away. This process is referred to as corrosion.
