When an underground storage tank is being installed, industry recommended practices call for a layer of backfill to be placed on the bottom of the excavation, as well as on the bottom of pipe trenches.

 

This layer of pea gravel, crushed rock, or sand provides a uniform “bed” that cushions and supports the bottom of the tank and piping.
